This week I,

To be more responsible,

Eco-tip 14. Start your own native plant garden

Spring is in full bloom, so why not consider starting your own native plant garden?

There are lots of great reasons to use native plants in your garden. Here are a few:
  • Native plants are beautiful. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours.
  • Native plants are adapted to our climatic conditions. They are relatively low maintenance!
  • Native plants have superior wildlife values. Plants are used by wildlife as food, shelter and places to rest and reproduce. By introducing native plants to your garden, you can provide patches of natural habitat for many species. A well-designed garden can offer birds and pollinators, such as butterflies, more living space, feeding opportunities and safety from predators.
  • Native plants have ecosystem values. They help regulate climate, prevent erosion, improve water quality and cycle nutrients.
  • Native plants contribute to biodiversity.

Before you start, here's some things to keep in mind:
  • What kind of soils and natural plant communities exist in your area?
  • What is the desired long-term look and feel of your garden?
  • How much space do you have?
  • Likewise, how much space do the plants, especially trees, need to mature?
  • Are there any obstructions, such as buildings or overhead wires?

So do your part, do your research to see what plants are native to your area and help protect native biodiversity by greening your garden.
