Toddler-Friendly Felt Christmas Tree Tutorial

Are you looking for a toddler-friendly Christmas tree alternative? This Toddler-Friendly Felt Christmas Tree Tutorial will add a festive flair to your home this holiday season, while creating a learning opportunity for your little one.

Holiday decorating is upon us, and today, I'm flashing back to the 2016 holiday season with this simple and festive DIY for your little one. 

I originally created this felt Christmas tree tutorial when my husband, 8 month old daughter and I were living in a teeny tiny one bedroom apartment as we awaited the completion of our first home. We were so excited to celebrate baby's first holiday season, but since, at the time, she was starting to become quite the mover, we were worried about her safety around the Christmas decorations in the small space. 

We usually opt for a real tree, complete with all of the fancy decorations, but because of our little mover, that year we decided to try something a little different. We had a small tree tucked out of the way for mom and dad, but also added this felt Christmas tree to the living room wall, just for the babe.

This simple-to-make felt Christmas tree is baby/toddler-safe, maintenance-free and decorated with lots of brightly coloured ornaments that your little one can easily rip off and put back on.  It added a festive flair to our teeny tiny abode, while creating a great learning opportunity for little miss Morley.

Toddler-Friendly Felt Christmas Tree Tutorial

Materials

• 1m green felt
• Several squares of felt, assorted colours
• Square of yellow felt
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks 
• Fabric scissors
• Soft tape measure (normal measuring tape will also work fine)
• String
• Marker
• 1 adhesive wall hook, medium

Directions

I purchased the felt from my local fabric store. They sell small individual squares in a variety of colours (for making the ornaments) as well as felt by the length, which I used to make the tree. You can also find a package of assorted colours, here. 

First, make the star for the top of your tree using the yellow felt. I started with the star because I had a limited amount of yellow felt and the size of the star would determine the size of the tree. 

Next, make the tree body. Lay your tree fabric (green felt) on the floor and fold in half, vertically. Using a marker, draw the outline of your tree. Cut along the line, through both layers of green felt. Open the fabric back up to reveal your bare tree. Attach the star to the top with hot glue.

Next step is to make the ornaments. I used a cup as my stencil to make circles on the felt. I made circular ornaments for my tree because they are easy for my daughter to grab. Get creative - you can make any size or shape you desire! Use the scrap felt to spruce up the ornaments.

When it comes time to sticking the ornaments on the tree, you won't need any additional material. Thanks to a little science and the power of static electricity, felt sticks to felt like magic.

Don't worry about making it perfect - your babe is not going to judge you if the tree is not symmetrical or the colours of your ornaments don't match. They are going to love it either way!

Now it's time to hang your tree. Using the glue gun, add a loop of string to the top of the star/tree. This will be how you hang the tree on the wall. Make sure that the wall you hang the tree on is a smooth surface. With the tape measure, measure the height of your tree on the wall. Following the directions on the package, affix the Command™Clear Medium Hook to the wall. 

Hang the tree on the hook. Since our apartment is so dry, the felt automatically clings to the wall. However, you can repeat the above steps with a few more hooks to support the branches, if needed. Ensure the weight of the tree is evenly distributed across the hooks. 

The great thing about using these hooks for this tree is that if you don't like the placement, or need to move it for any reason, you can do so without the fear of holes or damage!

The possibilities with this tree are endless. You can add as many different colours and shapes of ornaments as you wish! If you are feeling especially creative, you can even make presents to go "under the tree" or even a stocking to hang beside (like I did in the photo above). 

To incorporate a learning experience into your felt Christmas tree, make ornaments of different shapes, sizes and colours. Add numbers and letters to the ornaments to take it to the next level.

Now it's time to let your little one play and have some fun with their new tree! But please remember, do not leave your child unattended while doing this activity.

Books

Books are a BIG hit in our house with our 16 month old. She especially like books with flaps and movable parts, like "I Thought I Saw a Bear". This series also has an elephant, dinosaur and monkey.

Eating

Some of our favourite products for toddler and preschooler feeding come from Munchkin Canada. Specifically these Silicone Mats (also good for playdoh, other messy activities and airplane travel) and the Colour Me Hungry eating set, which comes with a plate, bowl, cup, utensils AND a box that they can colour. 

Fun & Games

This list could go on and on, but I've just narrowed it down to a few favourite toys. We like toys they are fun, but that also encourage problem solving, using imagination and independence, to name a few.

Some of our favourite includes - Duplo blocks, these magnetic building tiles, play-doh (don't forget to use the Munchkin Silicone Mats with this), Mr Potato Head, anything from Leapfrog (including this Step and Learn Scout), Melissa & Doug puzzles and these no-mess colouring pads. 

Bath 

Again, Munchkin has some great bath time fun for little ones, including these bath numbers and letters that stick to the side when they are wet.

Books

Right now, we're all about talking about emotions with our preschooler and find that books really help - In My Heart and The Color Monster are two great examples.

Some of our other favourites include The Wonky Donkey, The Big Bed, Disney Collection of Stories, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and anything Fancy Nancy.

Fun & Games

Play-doh is a great gift idea because it's not age specific and can be used by both toddlers and preschoolers (and maybe even mom and dad).

At the age of four, Morley is also starting to get into games including Classic Jenga (she's quite the pro), Guess Who and Connect Four, to name a few.

Arts & Crafts

Our preschool is just starting to get into arts and crafts where you must follow instructions, including this friendship bracelet making kit. They're still a little difficult for her to do on her own, but with a little bit of help she's able to design her own fancy jewellery.

Dolls

If you're like us, Frozen fever is running through the house. It's Frozen all day, every day. Our preschooler also LOVE playing with dolls, so we combine the best of both with these Anna and Elsa dolls. And don't forget the dress up gear to turn your preschooler into Anna or Elsa themselves!

Barbie has so many options and play sets. We love the dream house because it creates hours of endless fun, and encourages our preschooler to make believe. In honour of Barbie's 60th, Mattel released a line of career dolls, including the Barbie firefighter.

Our 24 Days of Kindness for Preschoolers Challenge

As parents, one of our greatest hopes is that our kids will turn out to be good people. But, how exactly do you get started in teaching your little ones about the importance of being kind? Check out this 24 Days of Kindness for Preschoolers challenge.

If you follow me on Instagram and watch my IG stories, you would have heard when I announced that we were joining Kate and Emmett from Emmett’s ABCs in their 24 Days of Kindness for Preschoolers challenge.

Copying those around them is what toddlers do best. And since being kind is a learned behaviour, we as parents can do our best by practicing kindness ourselves. When it comes to teaching kindness, we have the powerful opportunity (and responsibility) to lead by example. 

Kate and Emmett developed their own list of daily challenges to complete between December 1 to 24, which can be found here. However, as Morley is not currently in school, we slightly adapted our daily challenges to fit our current lifestyle. 

Here are our 24 Days of Kindness:

1. Smile at someone new.
2. Share a toy.
3. Share with mom and dad.
4. Give someone a compliment. 
5. Write a kind note to someone.
6. Give a friend or family member a hug.
7. Let someone have the first turn.
8. Help give a younger sibling a bath.
9. Tell a store cashier that you appreciate them.
10. Buy a toy that you would love and them donate it.
11. Take food to the dogs at the local shelter.
12. Wish someone Happy Holidays.
13. Make a handmade gift for someone you love.
14. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
15. Pick up a piece of trash.
16. Hold the door for the person behind you.
17. Talk to someone new (with mom and dad’s ok).
18. Give extra snuggles to your family pet or sibling.
19. Let your sibling play with one of your favourite toys.
20. Tell your mom or dad something you love about them.
21. Help make dinner.
22. Make a bird feeder and put it up.
23. Choose three toys that you’d like to pass along to another little boy or girl.
24. Recycle.

Not only will these daily challenges help to teach our toddler kindness and its importance, but it will also to help develop her social skills. She’s an extremely social little girl (when she wants to be and around “her people”) but this challenge will break her out of her shell and force her to interact with strangers (with mommy and daddy's ok), of all ages. There are also lots of days that involve sharing, because as a toddler, that's not always easy thing to do. 

We may already be a few days into December, but it’s never too late to start or to practice kindness.

Start them young. Together, we can make the world a better place with acts of kindness both big and small.
