Well, we finally made it to Anchorage… and it only took us 22 hours from my door to our apartment door!! We flew from Detroit to Houston (Ya, I don’t get it either), up to Seattle and then finally to Anchorage. What a day… filled with lots of Starbucks coffee, annoying each other and dominating Steve in scrabble. I now understand why they call this the great white north. It’s definitely great (or at least Anchorage is bigger than my hometown, hahaha), it’s white (cloudy with a chance of snow in the next few days) and it friggin’ far north!!!!
We’re living in a two bedroom apartment and have a roomie from Saskatchewan. The team is also giving us our own car to drive for the season, which is definitely needed to get around here. It’ll be a little weird living with two boys, but I’m sure as soon as Steve and I start working our magic in the kitchen things will be just fine!
Although I’m still a little disappointed we have to miss Justin Bieber in Greenville and that my skin will soon be the colour of the top of Mount McKinley, I think it’ll definitely be easy to love this place, especially for a nature nerd like myself and her soon to be converted bf. Waking up at 8 am in complete darkness and being 4 hours behind Ontario time will be a huge change, but at least when the sun does shine, we can just step out onto the balcony and enjoy the breathtaking view of the mountains.
If I got asked on my first day of university where I would see myself in 7 years, I most likely would have said studying sharks in the Bahamas or even diving the Great Barrier Reef. Never in a million years would I have said Alaska. I’m sure if Steve got asked where he saw his hockey career going, the same thing would be going through his mind. But here we are… and I know we’re going to love every minute of it!
So until next time… when I get the courage/energy to bundle up and head outside and we prove that there is more to this great state than Sarah Palin…
